Background

Greener Leith are a local Edinburgh non-profit organization run by volunteers who help promote a green lifestyle and campaign on behalf of local environmental issues.

Having previously worked on their branding and graphic design Designers on the Run were then approached by Greener Leith to design their promotional material for the 'Leith Links Ask'.

Over the Summer 2008 'Leith Links Ask' aimed to gauge the level of public support for ten different proposals that would improve Leith Links - Leiths largest public park.

The proposals were based on a study conducted by Cairns ICL that was commissioned by the City Of Edinburgh Council and completed in February 2007. It was felt that a wider consultation process was needed to identify which improvement proposals should be prioritised in future development plans.

Design solution

A leaflet was produced which was in keeping with the Greener Leith brand and that included a tear-off, free-post voting slip. This design including the use of custom icons was also carried through into the supporting website to keep the consistency of the design.

Voting would also be available through the website and visitors could also leave their comments, download the leaflet and view related YouTube video clips produced for each of the ten proposals.

Designers on the Run employed an ISO accredited eco printer to print the leaflets and to ensure that the design output would be eco-friendly. As a result the leaflets were printed using vegetable oil-based inks and Revive uncoated 100% recycled white paper.

Design Results

In total 550 people voted. 197 votes were received online, with the remaining votes submitted by post. It is hoped that the results of this project should inform a development plan and funding strategy for Leith Links that focuses on delivering the higher priority projects as voted by members of the general public.
